Windows 7 on HP Mini 1000 (1120NR)

by on Aug.13, 2009, under Technology

I’ve replaced Ubuntu 9.04 Netbook Remix with Windows 7 Starter on my HP Mini 1000.  After having no problems running the Windows 7 Release Candidate on it, I decided to switch to the RTM version.

So far I haven’t had any problems (and sound works–out-of-the-box sound didn’t work in UNR).  The Windows 7 Starter edition is missing the “Aero” bells and whistles, but for the most part when I use my netbook I’m remoting into another computer so this doesn’t bother me.

How the Google Chrome Netbook Operating System Will Go Bust

by on Jul.09, 2009, under Other Posts

I’m running Windows 7 RC on my HP Mini 1000 and love it. The OS uses up just over half of my 16 GB hard drive–but it’s a netbook so I don’t store much on it anyways. It runs surprisingly fast under the little Atom processor and the 1 GB of RAM. Also of note, there are no driver issues I’ve encountered–which is pretty shocking for a Microsoft OS

I’m happy with it for my mobile computing, and it’ll probably stay loaded on there until the Google OS comes out…hopefully the Google OS becomes available around the same time as the RC expires!

Ubuntu 9.04 Netbook Remix on HP Mini 1000

by on May.17, 2009, under Technology

A couple weeks ago I installed Ubuntu 9.04 (Jaunty Jackalope) Netbook Remix on my HP Mini 1000.

I tried tried UNR (Ubuntu Netbook Remix) a few months ago on a virtual machine and really liked the interface.  Installing it on my netbook took some consideration because I believe it voided my warrenty (I didn’t get any kind of extended warranty, so just the standard warranty).  In the end, I decided I liked the interface enough, wanted to use the new EXT4 file system (which is supposed to be faster on solid-state drives) and everything else 9.04 has to offer.  Most importantly though is always being up to date.  With HP MiE, I assume I was only getting updates after they tested them, found no problems in the existing infrastructure and decided to release them.  Overall it’s probably not a big deal to be a bit behind the times, but not when it comes to Firefox security updates and the like.

unr-desktop-small

[UPDATE]: It’s probably worth mentioning that out-of-the-box sound does not work through the speakers (it’s noted here).  There is an official bug submission related to the issue here, and possibly a fix some where.  I haven’t gotten around to looking into this yet; sound works through the headphone jack and I guess sound through the speakers is just not something I require in a netbook. 🙂

HP Mini 1000 (1120NR): Week 3

by on Mar.14, 2009, under Technology

It’s been a few weeks since I’ve got my HP Mini 1000 (1120NR) FedEx’d in the mail.  Here’s what I think so far:

Tweaks I’ve Already Performed

Synaptic Package Manager – Although not in the Harbour desktop menu, it is installed on the computer.  It can be assessed from the Run Command windows (ALT+F2) by typing “synaptic”.

GSynaptic – I installed this application to turn off the “tap” feature on the touch pad.

Gnome-RDP – One of the reason I decided to buy a netbook over a traditional laptop is that I don’t need another computer.  I have–and probably will always have–a nice desktop computer.

What Doesn’t Work

Dashboard Mail – It still says “Not Configured” even through I’ve followed the directions and set up my e-mail account in Thunderbird.  I’ve posted questions on two forums (no response) and e-mailed HP Support about it.  Their response thus far has been “we’ll look into it”.

Firefox add-ons – Although the computer is Ubuntu 8.04 with Firefox, when I go to Tools > Add-ons, this is what I see:

firefox-add-ons

I can still install add-ons by going to https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/, but this helpful integration menu doesn’t appear to work.

Firefox Version – Since all the Linux software comes from HP’s Linux repositories, getting the 3.0.6 update was a little late.

Overall Likes

Size – It sure is compact.  Looking at it, closed sitting on a table, one might think it’s one of those things you put your credit card so the waiter can go swipe it.

Overall Dislikes

Size – It sure is compact.  It’s taking a little bit of getting used to.  Although the keyboard is 92% a regular laptop keyboard, when you’ve only been typing on a couple sizes of keyboard for 20 years, it takes a little getting used to.  After two weeks though I’m no longer hitting TAB with my pinky when it’s going to A.

Performance – I’m a serious multitasker and have noticed a little lag when I’m remoted to two different computers and have 7 Firefox tabs open–but nothing bad.

HP Mini 1000: “Home Screen Mail w/ Gmail and IMAP?”

by on Feb.27, 2009, under Technology

Me to HP @ 2/27/2009:

My netbook has the MiE OS. The home screen says “Mail – Not Configured” even though I’ve followed the instructions setting up my e-mail account in Thunderbird. My e-mail account is Gmail, using an IMAP connection if that’s helpful.

HP to Me @ 2/27/2009:

Hello SLeepdepD,

Thank you for contacting HP Total Care.

I gather from your email that you would like to know whether there are any upgrade plans from Ubuntu 8.04 to 8.10 and Firefox from 3.04 to 3.06.

I also see that you are unable to configure your email account and the screen says “Mail – Not Configured” even though you have configured it.

SLeepdepD, regarding the issue with configuring the email account on your netbook, I request you to give us some time so that we will try to configure the email account in our lab systems and will get back to you with the next steps.

I would like to inform you that currently there are no upgrade plans to upgrade Ubuntu or Firefox in (MIE) Mobile Internet Experience.

This is Debbie from HP Total Care.

This is a followup email concerning our recent email interaction regarding the email account configuration whihc says “Mail-not configured” even though you had set it up.

SLeepdepD, as we are researching for an exact resolution, I request you to reconfigure the email account. Follow the below instructions:

To set up your email account, follow these steps:

In the Mail section of the Home Screen, click Click here to set up your email. The Mail Setup window opens.

Click Thunderbird Account Settings. The New Account Setup wizard opens.

Click Email account and then click Next.

Follow the on-screen instructions to set up your email.

Me to HP @ 3/2/2009:

Debbie,

Thanks for responding to my e-mail.  The HP Mini is my first HP computer and thus far I have been very impressed by the attention of the support staff.  Thank you!

I’ve followed the directions you detailed in your e-mail for setting up my Thunderbird account.  Again, I’m using Gmail via the IMAP protocol.  I don’t know if this makes a difference to the mail widget on the home screen.

I’ve included several screen shots: my home screen (after the Gmail account has been setup), my Thunderbird interface (I’ve blurred out some of my Gmail Filters for security, but otherwise the screen shot is intact), and then a series of screen shots of my Gmail Account configuration.

I hope this is enough to debug the issue; please let me know if you need anything else from me.  Thanks!

Me to HP @ 3/16/2009:

Debbie,

It has been a couple weeks since I’ve heard anything on this issue.

I’m still encountering the problem.  Is there any new information you can give me?

Thanks.

HP to Me @ 3/19/2009:

HP Mini 1000: “Upgrade MiE to Ubuntu 8.10?”

by on Feb.27, 2009, under Technology

Purchased: HP Mini 1000 (1120NR)

by on Feb.24, 2009, under Technology

I just received my HP Mini 1000 (1120NR) from HP.com!

This is a netbook–which differs significantly from a traditional laptop.  When first heard about netbooks a few months ago, I found myself a little infatuated with the idea: portability, with a reliance on the “cloud”.  As I started reading reviews and shopping I began becoming something of a netbook purist.  It shouldn’t have a big hard drive–because it relies on the Internet; it doesn’t need a DVD–because it relies on the Internet.  I began modeling something of a methodology: I want my next computer to be an extension of the Internet.

HP Mini 1000: “Can I install my own copy of Windows XP Home on the Linux version?”

by on Feb.08, 2009, under Technology

I’m thinking about buying an HP Mini 1000, but have a few questions about them before I decide.  I decided to e-mail HP; here’s my question and their response.

Me to HP:

I’m considering purchase of the HP Mini 1000 with the Linux based OS. Because of my work’s VPN connection, I may not be able to use the Linux based OS. I have a copy of Windows XP Home. I notice a version of the HP Mini 1000 comes with Windows XP Home; should I need to, would I be able to load my copy of Windows XP Home onto the HP Mini, or does it run a special version of Windows XP Home?

HP to Me:

Hello SLeepdepD,

Thank you for contacting HP Total Care.

I really a ppreciate your interest, regarding your query with the HDD space it will depend upon the configuration that you choose, as it comes with 16 gb SSD (solid state drive) also, where if you install Xp it will take around 4 gb.

Now regarding thwe operating system query there are unit which come with Xp preinstalled, however if you want to install any other retails version of xp also you can.

This should resolve the issue. If you need further assistance, please reply to this message and we will be happy to assist you further.
