Alternative Hook To “syntaxhighlight”

I’m using Mediawiki and this extension for a code snippet repository and it’s working great. I am finding typing “syntaxhighlight” all the time to be a little cumbersome, so I added the following to the “SyntaxHighlight_GeSHi.php” in the “efSyntaxHighlight_GeSHiSetup” function:

$parser->setHook( 'sh', array( 'SyntaxHighlight_GeSHi', 'parserHook' ) );

Now I can just use “sh” in addition to “syntaxhighlight”.

Get Foursquare History In Google Calendar

by on Oct.24, 2010, under Technology

I use Google Calendar and have become a big fan of Foursquare in the last few months.

I just learn Foursquare has a feeds section in their website:

http://foursquare.com/feeds/

There is a link to retrieve your check-in history in the ICS format.  Right-click on the “In ICS” link and select “Copy link address”.

In Google Calendar, under Other Calendars on the left, click Add and select Add by URL.  Paste in the copied URL and click Add to Calendar.  Your Foursquare check-in’s will now appear in your calendar.

Using WallWatcher with DD-WRT

by on Oct.13, 2010, under Technology

I just installed WallWatcher on my Linksys54G router running DD-WRT.

I recommend setting up static IP address for MAC address the computer you’re installing DD-WRT on, if you haven’t already.

Settings needed in DD-WRT:

Services tab, Services sub-tab:

SNMP section:

SNMP: Enable
Location: Unknown
Contact: root
Name: dd-wrt
RO Community: public
RW Community: private

System Log section:

Syslogd: Enable
Remote Server: [IP address of the computer you’re installing WallWatcher on]

Security tab, Firewall sub-tab:

Log Management section:

Log: Enable
Log Level: High

Settings needed in WallWatcher Options:

Router tab:

Router: DD-WRT

Bandwidth tab:

Collect bandwidth usage: checked
From: snmp
Every: 30 sec (you can change this if you’d like)

SNMP OID’s section:

UpTime: 1.3.6.1.2.1.1.3.0
Received: 1.3.6.1.2.1.2.2.1.10.8
Sent: 1.3.6.1.2.1.2.2.1.16.8
Community: public

GPS Location in Photos

by on Oct.12, 2010, under Technology

Shafer Corn Maze, October 2010 - Viewed in Picasa

I’ve turned on “Store Location” in the camera settings of my Android phone.  It seems like a neat idea: be able to keep track which restaurant a friend’s birthday was at, or that great place we sat for fireworks last Fourth of July.

I guess it didn’t initially occur to me the privacy implications of sharing these pictures on some social media websites.  I tested out the availability of the location information on photos shared on Facebook and Twitter (via TwitPic).  These services both have some kind of resizing action performed on them which strips out this (and other) metadata from the file.  Tumblr however is one I’ve discovered which doesn’t do anything to the photo.

On the one hand this is good: you get to have your high-res photos unaltered on your Tumblr blog, and possibly you could update your theme to use this data some how.  For the average user however, this could be an easy way for someone to find out where you live.

Microsoft Access: “Make-Table Query” Force Memo Fields

by on Oct.05, 2010, under Programming

Unfortunately it looks like there isn’t a way to force Access to make a table with Memo data type fields instead of Text.  A functional work around is:

  1. Run the Make-Table query
  2. Edit the table in Design View
  3. Change the Text field to Memo
  4. Change the Make-Table query to an Append query
  5. Create a Delete query
  6. Run the new Append query
