Today was the first day of spring semester…for one class anyways.
This semester I’m taking two classes: one that meets Monday nights, the other meets Thursday nights–3 hours each. I’m hoping the fact that they’re evening classes, they only meet once a week, and that there are a few days between classes will make this semester a lot more managable than the last!
I was up until 4:30 AM working on this 1,350-word paper, a argumentative review of The Omnivore’s Dilemma and my last paper for Composition I. Things weren’t going too well until about 2:00 when I finally decided on a thesis…then it really started cooking.
Going back to school after a 10-year “sabbatical” has been difficult, but not for the reasons I anticipated. I was concerned with aptitude, study habits and time management–even being ostracized by my “peers” for my comparative old age. But to my surprise the most challenging aspect has been resuscitating my creativity. It may sound simple in concept but the art of articulating a personal belief or opinion on a subject through writing and speech when you’ve just been 9-to-5′ing it for so long…gosh. Tell me what to write, I’ll write it…just tell me to write and I’ll stay up until 4:30 in the morning “freewriting” for a thesis.
My last action of the evening before passing out on the couch was to post on my Facebook the message:
“is putting way too much effort into a first draft.”
