Hard Drive Enclosures: Hard Drive Plastic Melting?

by on May.20, 2009, under Technology

In January, after getting a new computer with two 320GB hard drives, I wanted to salvage the two 160GBs from my old computer and put them in enclosures.

I went to and found the Rosewill RX35.  It’s black aluminum and only cost $20.  What a great deal!  …I bought two.

Now, after just buying my first 1 TB hard drive (again, from NewEgg: SAMSUNG 1TB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache SATA for $75), I opened one of the enclosures to replace it and noticed this:

…that looks like melted plastic to me!  I always leave these enclosures on, further I think they’re included in my daily virus scan and weekly defragmentation schedule.  They’re both still working fine, but it is a little concerning.  I hope my new hard drive doesn’t get damaged!
