Purchased: HP Mini 1000 (1120NR)

by on Feb.24, 2009, under Technology

I just received my HP Mini 1000 (1120NR) from HP.com!

This is a netbook–which differs significantly from a traditional laptop.  When first heard about netbooks a few months ago, I found myself a little infatuated with the idea: portability, with a reliance on the “cloud”.  As I started reading reviews and shopping I began becoming something of a netbook purist.  It shouldn’t have a big hard drive–because it relies on the Internet; it doesn’t need a DVD–because it relies on the Internet.  I began modeling something of a methodology: I want my next computer to be an extension of the Internet.

I like it but I am bothered by what I see on the laptop. Is that the Vista OS you are running?

I like Vista…and that’s a friend’s laptop. He brought it over because it was blue-screening…in the process of fixing it, I discovered it had never had Windows Updates applied…ever…since 2007–didn’t even have SP1 on it.

Hey, I have been thinking of getting the latest version of this Netbook which has the same processor with a 80 GB hard drive. But my main intention for getting a netbook is surfing net, watching movies and some basic Adobe Photoshop work. Think this machine can handle it, or should i wait for a better processor?

    thanks for the interest
after a sojourn on the phone to India & the Phillipines and back to India, to help make it go, hp directed me to wait for the packaging and label and send the piece to TX for re-set up and return to me, after which I expect to proceed cautiosly out of the box.
Regarding the XP and Ubantu Q, I basically want e-mail and internet, occasionally, and think of the 1120 NR as a fancy blackberry, more and less. However, I have an Office Professional Edition 2003 (Includes 7 Microsoft Office Programs–Word2003,Excel2003,Outlook2003,PowerPoint2003,Access2003,Publisher2003, & InfoPath2003. My worry is the system would be too slow to hold my interest, and I better keep it uncomplicated, not to mention I have the above on PC all ready.
    Thanks again
    Briefly

Hey thanks for the reply… :) It comes with Windows XP Home Service Pack 3 and 80gigs of hard drive. Rest config is the same. I am getting mixed info on the net about whether this netbook will be able to play good quality video.

Could you please tell me whether,

    a) It can play movies in avi, mpeg format and display them full screen without black bands on the side?

    b) Can i install and use the latest version of Microsoft Office on it?

    c) Can I use it to run basic operations on Photoshop?

    d) I can leave it on at night and make full use of unlimited downloads?

Thanks in advance for your reply. :)
    Sameer.

      a) I can’t really say. Mine came with HP MiE, however I’ve since overwrote it with Ubuntu 9.04 Netbook Remix. I know a couple of times I’ve gone to YouTube and the videos were a little on the choppy side.

      b) I don’t see why not.

      c) Yeah, you should be able to. However without dedicated video memory and only 1 GB of RAM your performance will not be the greatest. If all you’re looking to do is crop/resize–maybe a little clean-up–you should be OK.

      d) Again, I don’t really have any confident answers for you, I imagine you could leave it on all night without any problem.

All and all, I think the methodology behind a Netbook is that its “power” comes from the Internet–a less expensive and mobile extension of the Internet. If what you’re looking for is a lot more than just consuming online content, you might find a better user experience from a traditional laptop. However if your use isn’t too heavy–and you want to save a few bucks–a Netbook might meet your needs.

      I hope that’s helpful.

    Hi,

Thanks for the detailed reply . You have addressed all my queries. Once again thanks for the detailed reply and prompt help. :)

Yesterday I went to an electronics mega mall and checked out both the HP and Lenovo models. Tough competition, but the performance will be the deciding factor now.

Thanks so much for your help :)
    Sameer.
