HP Mini 1000: “Does it come with a restore CD?”

by on Feb.08, 2009, under Technology

I’m thinking about buying an HP Mini 1000, but have a few questions about them before I decide.  I decided to e-mail HP; here’s my question and their response.

Me to HP:

I’m considering purchase of the HP Mini 1000 with the Linux based OS. I know the computer doesn’t have a CD-ROM drive, but does the computer come with a restore CD I can load onto a flash drive to restore the Mini back to factory?

HP to Me:

Hello SLeepdepD,

Just to confirm, the restore files are available for download online and will contain instructions for loading them to flash drive to restore on the HP Mini?

    Hi SLeepdepD
I use the Asus EEE 1000H netbook and absolutely love it. I was able to restore mine without a disc, from a hidden partition, though it does come with disc. I was originally going to buy an external drive but ended up just mapping the drive of my desktop, over my home network. I can now place a disc in the desktop drive and then run it from network(wirelessly[802.11N]). Look I’m an Asus fanboy but I do sell computers for a living and can highly recommend the Asus model

I downloaded an image writer software from HP, run it(the restore files were downloaded automaticaly), and was able to write the restore files to a 4GB flash drive. I the restore the OS from the flash drive without a problem. I now keep the drive as a dedicated restore media, just in case.
